National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society

According to the National Junior Honor Society website, five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning:

  • to create enthusiasm for scholarship

  • to stimulate a desire to render service

  • to promote leadership

  • to encourage responsible citizenship

  • to develop character in the students

These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.

Our candidacy parameters are aligned with the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). We partner with other chapters to maintain the same expectations and standards.

To evaluate a candidate, the faculty council uses four forms of input:

  • students with a 4.0 cumulative GPA are identified
  • school disciplinary records are reviewed
  • members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding professional, observable actions of a candidate’s leadership, character, and citizenship
  • candidates are asked to complete a Candidate Information Form – Students who meet the scholarship requirement will have an opportunity to complete a form detailing their accomplishments in and commitment to service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

Students’ service within the school or with school-sponsored events is noted from our service database.

Continuing to enhance service, leadership, character, and citizenship as a global citizen and maintaining excellence in scholarship will benefit students for consideration as a candidate for NJHS next year and for the National Honor Society in high school.

Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

Citizenship
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects the U.S. form of government; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.

Any solicited faculty input and all Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection.

Meetings are currently held each Thursday after school. Members plan and execute service activities within the school and with school-sponsored events.
