During the board meeting on April 13, 2015, a presentation was given by Holmes’ Heroes and the Action Club.

Holmes’ Heroes is a problem based learning club where students identify a local or global problem, brainstorm possible solutions, create an action plan, and attempt to implement the solution. Students are currently working on issues such as providing clean drinking water, ending hunger, homelessness, domestic violence, bullying, and animal cruelty.

An eighth grade student from Holmes discussed his passion for finding clean drinking water in Mauritania, Africa. He presented his group’s action plan of taking salt water and converting it to fresh water by using reverse osmosis, which also distributes energy to those without power for their homes and businesses during the process.

The group spoke about “Service Day” at Holmes where an entire day of service is dedicated to helping others, and contemplated the bigger picture of what could be achieved if “Service Day” was everyday, by everyone.

Four members from Holmes’ Action Club, a community service group, also presented. This past school year, members selected several projects to help the school and community including a “Pink Out” for breast cancer awareness, a food drive for the Mount Prospect food pantry, and making blankets to donate to PADS.
