Clubs, Activities, Intramural Sports and Tryout Activities
LRC (Learning Resource Center)
Time is available in the LRC for students to work on homework or other school related projects after school. If a student wishes to use the LRC during the Activity Period, he or she MUST sign up in the LRC before the end of the 8th period.
Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader club is a program open to all interested students at all grade levels. The program is simple:
- Choose a book from the Accelerated Reader list.
- Read the selected book.
- When you finish reading the book, take a multiple choice test in the LRC.
- Achieve a passing grade on the test and earn valuable points.
- Use these points to obtain prizes, homework passes, extra credit, etc. Students who reach their goal during the first three grading periods will be eligible to attend a special Accelerated Reader activity.
Band
Students have an opportunity to participate in the Holmes Junior High Band on a two or three day schedule through their Fine Arts program. Section rehearsals are also scheduled on a rotation basis. Students perform in concert during the year. Attendance at concerts is required.
Chorus
Students have an opportunity to participate in the Holmes Junior High Chorus on a two or three day schedule through their Fine Arts program. Students are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals in addition to the school day. The chorus performs in concerts during the year. Students will also perform at various community functions. Attendance at concerts is required.
Orchestra
Students have an opportunity to participate in the District 59 Orchestra while attending Holmes Junior High. Students have weekly lessons to augment their musical learning. Occasional additional rehearsals are held, and students are required to attend. Attendance at concerts is required.
Games Galore
If you like to have fun hanging out with friends while exploring the web, playing games, listening to music, creating a project using garage band, etc., then this is the club for you! Games Galore meets on Mondays during the Activity Period in the LRC.
Various seasonal events are scheduled throughout the year to provide the opportunity for everyone to be involved. Intramurals is not a tryout activity – it is open to everyone! Listen to morning announcements for information.
Chamber Orchestra – All Grades
Chamber Orchestra is open to all Holmes musicians. Membership is determined by attitude and interest. This group performs at many local and community events. Rehearsals are held at 7:00 a.m. Check the school calendar for these rehearsals dates.
Cheerleading– 7th and 8th Grade
This activity is for students interested in cheering during the boys’ basketball season. Tryouts take place at the beginning of October and the season ends in the beginning of February. Students will be selected for 1 squad of 7th and 8th graders. Practices will take place twice a week during the Activity Period. A current physical exam and proof of medical insurance coverage must be on file in the school office in order to tryout.
Jazz Band – 7th and 8th Grade
Jazz Band is open to all Holmes musicians. Membership is determined by attitude, interest and audition. It will enable students to learn a modern approach to music performance and jazz style of playing. Rehearsals are held before school begins in the morning or during the Activity Period.
News Crew – 7th and 8th Grade
This activity is for students interested in learning about the technology used in television production and who would like to be a part of a live, daily announcement program. Tryouts take place in the spring for the following year. The News Crew meets every morning as soon as they arrive at school.
Pom Pons – All Grades
The squad consists of 16-20 girls who will learn 1 routine to be performed at 7th and 8th grade boys’ home basketball games. Tryouts are in mid-October and the season ends in February. Practices will be held weekly in order to prepare for performances.
Step Team – All Grades
“STEP” is a mix of several cultural influences as a collection or rhythms created by using one’s hands and feet. Members will choreograph routines and perform at various times throughout the school year. The Holmes Step Team is open to all eligible students.
Swing Chorus – 7th and 8th Grade
This group is an auditioned group which performs both singing and dancing. Auditions are held in the fall. Performances are given at two main choral concerts and at various other functions throughout Chicagoland and in involved in competitions. This activity meets all year. The Choral Director will provide students with a calendar for practice dates and times as well as performances, concerts and/or contests.
Junior Swing – 6th Grade
Junior Swing is an auditioned group of 6th graders. The group auditions in early October. Students must be Chorus members to audition. It is choreographed by two 8th grade student leaders. The group performs at two choral group concerts and at other activities during the school year. The Choral Director will provide dates and times for practices and performances.
Yearbook – “Flight” – All Grades
The school yearbook committee is open to all students interested in learning how to put together the events of the school year for a yearbook. Students will be expected to type well, be creative with layouts, and will learn how to use a computer based yearbook program.
